I have some nice Birch lumber. Do you think Birch will be a good material to make solid linings. What other materials do you like and why? Thanks, |

I use poplar but only because I have some nice quartered 1x stock left over from some construction work. |

I've used beech for solid linings (3 strips of 2mm thick), birch should be fine. |

About anything easy to bend works well. Birch, bass, aspen, poplar, ash, oak, maple, willow, etc. |

I just just did one using Cherry, I can think of no reason why birch wouldn't work. |

I like to try and approximate the shrinkage numbers of the lining with the side wood. Probably overkill but to me it makes sense. Example: If am doing an East Indian Rosewood guitar and I have basswood, stika spruce and mahogany linings available I would use the mahogany. ............Radial .......... Tangent EIR ........... 2.7 ............ 5.9 Basswood ........... 6.6 ............ 9.3 Mahogany ...........2.9 ........... 4.3 Sitka Sp. ........... 4.3 .............. 7.5 |

Does the wood need to be quartered? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't believe quartered linings would add anything to the strength of the body. Most B&S are not carefully quarter sawn these days, like they were years ago. (that's why many sides display attractive figure as opposed to the quarter sawn of a few years ago (fairly mundane). Just look at BRW. And, if a side is carefully quartered it will expand along the radial. If the lining grain is oriented to match, it will be flat sawn and expansion will also move along the radial, so I don't worry so much about grain. |
